TRAD DANCES

"Dance is the mother of the arts. Music and poetry are determined over time, figurative arts and architecture in space: dance lives equally in time and space. In it creator and creation, work and artist, are one"
Curt Sachs, History of Dance

Getting closer to the pleasure and joy of dance, through songs and rhythms full of life and stories, colors and different cultures. By dancing we travel through the geography of countries and the history of societies, we travel to seek the roots of rhythm and relationship in the physical body and in movement, exercising the ability to listen to oneself, others and the group through the step, the voice and ear, developing proprioceptive abilities; rediscovering the physical-emotional communication potential of dances and sounds of traditions that culturally sacralize the community as a place of sharing. Get ready for a tiptoe journey from Southern Italy to France, from Spain to Greece, with stops in Ireland and Eastern Europe... The traditional dance courses of Arci Tavola Tonda are led by Barbara Crescimanno

TRAD MUSIC

According to what was stated by UNESCO in Paris in 1989, addressing the Governments of the member countries: «traditional and popular culture is part of the universal heritage of humanity, [it] is a powerful means of bringing different peoples and social groups closer together and of affirming their cultural identity».

Music is one of the privileged forms within the human communication process. It embodies symbols, concepts and objects produced by a culture in a space and time, and can be taken as a paradigm through which a culture can be read. What do we mean by 'popular'? On the one hand, the possibility of access to lessons for everyone and, on the other, focusing on the instruments and rhythms of the Sicilian and Mediterranean popular tradition. During the year the students will follow instrument lessons and ensemble music meetings, preparatory to joining the Arci Tavola Tonda Popular Orchestra.
The courses of the School of Popular Music are: Frame Drum, Transverse Flute, Accordion, Violin, Mandolin, Vocal Technique, Choir, Guitar.

CHORÓS. Dances, Voices and Rhythms of Southern Italy

At the origins of the Western theatrical tradition is the Greek chorus, a 'collective character' which, in honor of Dionysus, god of intoxication, moves, dances and sings in unison.
The tragedy choir of the classical period was born on the archetype of the choirs of Nymphs and Muses, from which the initiatory choirs of adolescents and young women and men of the archaic Greek world also derive.
In Southern Italy and Sicily the oldest archaeological evidence regarding dance and music are linked to the ritual world of the goddesses, their priestesses and offerers, and, until the last century, the frame drum was a purely female ritual instrument (see Atlas of the frame drum in the Euro-Mediterranean area).
Anyone today who wants to study performing arts, theatre, singing, percussion, dance, must look to these roots, to a world in which what is today separated into different disciplines was born intertwined together.
The proposed training course, lasting two years, is divided into two weekly lessons which include teachings:
- on the rhythmic movement relating to the dances of Southern Italy and on breathing and vocal techniques, with introductory elements to the pedagogy of the group and movement;
- on the techniques on the frame drum.

The dance path and the percussive path will develop in parallel: the same repertoire will be tackled at the same time from the point of view of the rhythm of the steps and the technique on the drum.
The weekly appointments will be accompanied by intensive in-depth meetings, on a monthly basis, on the numerous topics addressed during the course of study, both 'technical' and theoretical.

SPONDE SONORE

Sponde Sonore is the annual series of concerts that the Tavola Tonda Association has been organizing since 2017 within the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo.

The artistic offering proposed by Sponde Sonore over the years has moved in the wake of contemporary and authorial music and, as can be seen from the name of the event itself, aims to offer a range of sounds, styles, genres and to bring together generations of artists and artists who have set in motion processes of innovation, re-elaboration and interpretation of musical traditions, both Italian and international. The program therefore ranges from jazz to world music, from author music to forays into electronics, even within the same concert, but with a single denominator: the ability to tell the present starting from the roots to which one is linked, demographically or emotionally.

LUTHERIE

Guitars, violins, plectrum instruments, frame drums, in our laboratory we don't miss anything...

The Lutherie is the result of a project that trained ten craftsmen and women capable of repairing, restoring and building acoustic instruments, with particular attention to traditional ones, in a context in which this art is now rapidly being lost. At the end of the training, two of the students of the original group became the managers of the Popular Lutherie of Arci Tavola Tonda.

Come and visit us at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa!

OMAR SOSA & GUSTAVO OVALLES @ SPONDE SONORE
05-06-2024 21:30
€20.00
